When it is sung or recited

When it is sung: At the end of a Hanuman puja, usually right after the Hanuman Chalisa or a Sundarkand (the Ramayana chapter on Hanuman) recitation, while a lamp is waved. It is sung especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays and on Hanuman Jayanti.

Meaning

The aarti addresses Hanuman as the beloved son of Anjani, the crusher of the wicked and a power of Raghunath (Ram). It says mountains tremble at his strength and that disease and affliction do not come near. The verses recall scenes from the Ramayana: carrying Ram's message across the sea, finding Sita, burning Lanka, bringing the Sanjeevani herb for Lakshmana and defeating Ahiravana in the netherworld. In the closing verses gods, humans and sages wave the lamp, his mother Anjana performs the aarti with camphor on a golden plate, and the traditional hope is stated that the singer reaches the highest abode.

Please note

Tradition links this aarti to Goswami Tulsidas because the closing couplet in some printed forms names him, but that is a traditional attribution and no firm proof was found. Wording varies between families and booklets: some forms leave out the couplet 'Lank vidhvans kiye Raghurai', some put it after the last verse, and some print 'basahin Baikunth' instead of 'basi Baikunth'. Many sing the first line 'Aarti kije Hanuman Lala ki' as a refrain after every two couplets, as shown here.
