Muhurat for travel (Yatra)

Traditional guidance for starting a journey: nakshatras and tithis, Disha shool (directions to avoid by weekday), Chandra bala and practical USA advice.

Finding auspicious days…

What this event is

Yatra is the word for a journey, and it covers anything from a long pilgrimage to a flight home to India. Tradition asks you to begin a journey at a good time, with a prayer, so that you travel safely and return well. This is a gentle custom, and it is not a reason to avoid necessary trips.

Auspicious timing in the classical guidance

Families and priests follow differing lists. This is the most widely cited one.

Essential (as tradition holds it)

  • Avoid starting in Rahu Kalam and Bhadra.
  • Avoid Panchak for a journey southwards, which is its classical caution.
  • Avoid the rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) and Amavasya.

Strongly preferred

  • Nakshatra. Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Revati. Many of these are called chara (moving) or laghu (light), which suit travel. Avoid Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Jyeshtha, Moola, Purva Ashadha and Purva Bhadrapada.
  • Tithi. The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th.

Ideal

  • Weekday. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are generally suitable. Tuesday and Saturday are avoided by many, though this depends on the direction (see below).
  • Month and paksha. No month or paksha is excluded.
  • Time of day. A morning departure outside Rahu Kalam, or the Abhijit muhurat near local noon.

Disha shool

Disha shool (disha = direction, shool = thorn) is the idea that each weekday has a direction in which it is best not to start a journey. The usual teaching is:

Weekday Direction to avoid
Monday East
Tuesday North
Wednesday North
Thursday South
Friday West
Saturday East
Sunday West

If you must travel in that direction, tradition suggests a small remedy, such as eating a little of a specified food before leaving, or leaving a short time later. Different families use different remedies, so ask an elder.

Chandra bala

Chandra bala is the strength of the Moon for you, counted from your birth Moon sign. In general terms, the Moon in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th or 11th sign from your birth sign is favourable for starting something. The 4th, 8th and 12th are considered less favourable. A jyotishi can tell you your own birth sign. Since you may not know it, treat the general day-level rules above as the main guide.

Preparation and ritual outline

  1. Pack and finish your documents the day before so you can leave calmly.
  2. Before leaving, bow to the family deity or Ganesha, light a lamp, and offer a short prayer for safe travel.
  3. Touch the feet of elders and seek their blessing, or call them if they are far away.
  4. A drop of curd and sugar or a sweet is eaten by many families before leaving.
  5. Step out with the right foot first.

A short prayer is ॐ गं गणपतये नमः (Om Gam Ganapataye Namah). Ask a priest or elder to guide pronunciation.

Practical notes for the USA

Flights, trains and roads set the real time. Airline schedules, school breaks and work leave have priority. You do not need a perfect muhurat for a flight.

  • Departing from home. Take the muhurat for the moment you leave your home, not for the plane's take-off. Say your prayer and step out at the best time of the day, even if you then wait at the airport.
  • Long flights across time zones. Always use the local sunrise-based times for the city where you start your journey.
  • Driving. Check weather and rest stops first. Safety comes before ritual.
  • Pilgrimage. If you are planning a tirtha yatra to India, choose the dates based on the temple, the season and the visa and leave, and then check the muhurat.

This is general guidance. A personal muhurat is made from the family's own horoscopes by a qualified jyotishi.

Do

  • Choose the best hour you can for the departure from home, not for the flight itself.
  • Carry a small picture of your deity or a prayer, if you like.
  • Tell a family member your plans.
  • Rest well before a long trip.
  • Express thanks on arrival.

Don't

  • Don't cancel a family emergency or a medical trip because of a rule.
  • Don't let fear govern a normal trip.
  • Don't leave in a rush while quarrelling.
  • Don't leave your home unlocked or the lamp burning unattended.
  • Don't buy tickets only by astrology and ignore the price or safety.
