Muhurat for buying a vehicle

Traditional guidance for choosing an auspicious day and hour to take delivery of a car or bike, with a simple Vahana puja and tips for dealer dates in the USA.

Finding auspicious days…

What this event is

A new car, motorcycle or scooter is a major purchase, and many families like to take delivery at an auspicious time and bless the vehicle with a short puja. This is called Vahana puja (vahana = vehicle). It asks for a safe journey for everyone who will ride in it.

Auspicious timing in the classical guidance

Guidance for vehicles comes from the general rules for starting something new and movable. Families and priests follow differing lists, so the most widely cited one is given here.

Essential

  • Take delivery outside Rahu Kalam, Bhadra, and eclipses.
  • Avoid Pitru Paksha, Adhika masa and Kharmas where your family keeps them.
  • Avoid Shukra asta (Venus too close to the Sun to be seen). Venus rules comforts and vehicles, so this is given special weight. Guru asta is also avoided.

Strongly preferred

  • Nakshatra. Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Revati. These are quick, soft or movable nakshatras suited to travel and trade. Avoid Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Moola.
  • Tithi. The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th, and Purnima, in either paksha. Avoid the rikta tithis (4th, 9th and 14th) and Amavasya.

Ideal

  • Weekday. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Sunday is accepted by some sources. Tuesday and Saturday are avoided by many families.
  • Month. No month is excluded in this list.
  • Time of day. The best part of the day outside Rahu Kalam, or around Abhijit muhurat near local noon. A very late-night delivery is not usual.

Many families also treat festival days as favourable for vehicles, for example Dhanteras and Vijaya Dashami (Dussehra). Check that these days fall outside the periods your family avoids.

Preparation and ritual outline

  1. Clean the vehicle inside and out and bring it to a clear spot.
  2. Place a small swastika in kumkum on the bonnet or the front, and tie a mauli (sacred red thread) or a garland.
  3. Light a lamp or agarbatti and offer flowers, rice and kumkum to Ganesha.
  4. Offer a coconut. Where breaking a coconut is not possible, place it on a plate and touch the vehicle with it.
  5. Many families keep a lemon in front of each wheel and move the vehicle slightly forward over it for a safe journey.
  6. Share sweets, and make the first drive a short one to a temple or a relative's home.

You may chant ॐ गं गणपतये नमः (Om Gam Ganapataye Namah). Ask a priest or elder to guide pronunciation.

Practical notes for the USA

The pickup date is usually set by the dealer, the loan approval or the shipping schedule. In the USA, the DMV registration, the bank and the insurance also set dates. These practical steps have priority.

  • If you can choose. Ask the dealer for an appointment in the best hour of the day on a favourable weekday.
  • If you cannot choose. Take delivery on the dealer's date, then do a small Vahana puja at home at the best time that day, or on the first suitable evening.
  • At the dealership or garage. Most dealers do not allow a coconut or a flame. Do the lamp, tilak and thread at home or in your garage, or place flowers and a tilak. Keep it brief and tidy.
  • First drive. A short drive to a temple or a relative's house is a gentle tradition.
  • Time zone. Use the sunrise-based local times shown for your city.

This is general guidance. A personal muhurat is made from the family's own horoscopes by a qualified jyotishi.

Do

  • Pick a calm hour, and avoid rushing the paperwork.
  • Say a short prayer for safety before the first drive.
  • Keep a small Ganesh picture or a prayer in the car if you like.
  • Thank the dealer and the people who helped.
  • Drive carefully and follow the laws, which is part of the blessing.

Don't

  • Don't take delivery in Rahu Kalam if you have a choice.
  • Don't let a perfect muhurat pressure you into a bad deal.
  • Don't break a coconut or light a flame where it is unsafe or not allowed.
  • Don't use a list built for another city's sunrise.
  • Don't treat an accident as a sign of a "wrong" time.
