When it is sung or recited
When it is sung: On Sunday mornings after offering water (arghya) to the Sun, and on Sun-related observances such as Sankranti, Ratha Saptami and Chhath. It is sung at the close of Surya worship while the lamp is waved.
Meaning
This aarti praises Surya, the Sun, as the son of the sage Kashyap and Aditi. It speaks of him as the one who removes the darkness of the three worlds, riding a chariot of seven horses that has a single wheel. Gods, sages and Brahmins are said to worship him, and he is called the eye of the world, the one who opens the lotus flowers and the inspirer of good deeds. The verses remember him as a remover of sorrow and of the dirt of the mind. In the last verse the devotee asks for his compassion and prays to be freed from ignorance and attachment and to be given true knowledge.
Please note
A traditional aarti to the Sun; we did not find a reliably named composer. Printed versions differ slightly in the first line (some read Om jai Kashyap nandan, prabhu jai Aditi nandan), and families may sing it a little differently. Another popular Surya aarti, Om jai Surya Bhagwan, is a separate composition and is not included here.
