When it is sung or recited
When it is sung: At the end of Saraswati puja on Vasant Panchami, during Navratri, in schools, and when a student or artist begins a new course of study or practice. Like other aartis, it is sung at the close of a puja while the lamp is waved before the image or picture.
Meaning
This aarti praises Saraswati, the goddess of learning, speech and music. The first verse calls her rich in good qualities and famous in all three worlds. Next it pictures her: a face like the moon, a seat on a lotus, a swan as her mount, a veena in her left hand and a rosary in her right. The fourth verse points to the traditional story in which, at the gods' request, she turned Manthara's mind, which set events moving toward the end of Ravana. In the last verses the devotee offers incense, a lamp, fruit and dry fruit, and prays for the darkness of ignorance and attachment to be cleared and for the eye of knowledge.
Please note
This is a traditional aarti; we did not find a reliably named composer. Wording and verse order vary a little between families and regions. Here the line Jai jai Saraswati mata is repeated after every verse, and printed versions sing the opening verse once more at the end.
