When it is sung or recited
When it is sung: At the end of a Ram puja, while a lamp is waved before the image. It is sung especially on Ram Navami and Vijayadashami, and at the close of a Sundarkand or Ramcharitmanas recitation or an Akhand Ramayan path.
Meaning
The aarti calls the singer to worship Raghuvar, Lord Ram, who is described as truth, consciousness and bliss, auspicious and beautiful. He is remembered as the son of Dasharatha, the delight of Kaushalya, the protector of gods and sages and sandalwood to the hearts of devotees. The next verses say that in both his formless and his embodied aspects he is worshipped by all the worlds, and that he is a divine man untouched by maya (illusion). He is praised as the husband of Janaki, the lord of the world and the one refuge of all living and non-living beings. The last verse calls him affectionate to those who take refuge, steadfast in his vows and the remover of the sorrow of the humble, and says his name is believed to purify the world.
Please note
Traditional; no composer is reliably known. This page uses 'Aarti kije Shri Raghuvar ji ki' rather than the Shri Ramayan Ji aarti ('Kirti kalit lalit Siya Pi ki'), because its full text reads the same in several sources and it is addressed directly to Ram. The Ramayan Ji aarti is a separate aarti sung after a Ramayan recitation and is not included here. Small differences in spelling and wording may be found between booklets and families (in the third verse one word is printed 'avanh' in some and 'avan' in others), and many sing the first line again as a refrain after each verse.
