When it is sung or recited
When it is sung: At the end of a Lakshmi puja, while a lamp is waved before the image. It is sung especially on Diwali night after the Ganesha puja, in Friday worship of Lakshmi and during the Vaibhav Lakshmi vrat (a Friday fast kept for Lakshmi).
Meaning
The aarti hails Lakshmi as the mother of the world and says that Vishnu himself serves her night and day. She is named as Uma, Rama and Brahmani, one power in several forms, whom the sun, the moon and the sage Narada also praise. The middle verses say she dwells even in the underworld, that sacrifice, clothing and the plenty of the table all depend on her grace, and that she was born of the ocean of milk along with the fourteen jewels. One verse says that in a home where she lives good qualities arrive and the mind loses its fear. The last verse states the traditional hope of the singer: joy settling in the heart and sins falling away.
Please note
Traditional; no composer is reliably documented. Wording varies slightly between families and booklets, especially in the fifth verse ('Jis ghar mein tum rahtin' in some books, 'Jis ghar tum rahti tahan' or 'Jis ghar tum rahti ho, tanhi mein hain' in others). Some booklets put two Sanskrit verses beginning 'Mahalakshmi namastubhyam' before the aarti; they are not included here. This page gives the widely printed eight-verse form.
