When it is sung or recited

When it is sung: After chanting the Gayatri mantra or a havan, on Thursdays, and on Gayatri Jayanti (different traditions keep that day on different dates). Like other aartis, it is sung at the close of a puja while the lamp is waved.

Meaning

This aarti turns the aarti plate itself into a form of spiritual practice: the lamp is knowledge, the wick is faith and the ghee is devotion. The mind is called the pure plate over which the light of the Goddess shines, and pure wishes are pictured as the sound of the bell. The fourth verse says that before her even the rule of the three worlds looks dull. The last verses state the traditional belief that troubles do not come near a person who performs the aarti with love and discipline and meditates on Gayatri, the dear child of Brahman, and the aarti expresses the wish for wealth and happiness.

Please note

This is a traditional aarti; we did not find a reliably named composer. The refrain line Aarti Shri Gayatri ji ki is also sung once at the very beginning. Printed versions differ in verse order and in a few spellings; in particular the second line of the third verse and the opening words of the first verse are printed in different ways, and this page gives the form found in most of the sources checked. Another popular aarti to Gayatri, Jayati jai Gayatri mata, is a separate composition and is not included here.
