Muhurat for Griha Pravesh (housewarming)

Classical timing for entering a new home: nakshatras, tithis, months and periods to avoid, a simple puja outline and tips for apartments in the USA.

Finding auspicious days…

What this event is

Griha pravesh (griha = home, pravesh = entering) is the ceremony of entering a new home for the first time. It invites peace, health and prosperity into the household, and asks Ganesha, the Vastu deities and the Navagraha (nine planets) to bless the space.

Tradition describes three kinds. Apoorva is the first entry into a newly built or newly bought home. Sapoorva is a return after a long absence, such as living abroad. Dwandwa is re-entry after a disruption such as a repair after fire or flood.

Auspicious timing in the classical guidance

This follows the widely cited lists from Muhurta Chintamani and Muhurta Martanda. Families and priests follow differing lists, so ask yours.

Essential

  • Season. Avoid Chaturmas (Devshayani Ekadashi to Prabodhini Ekadashi) and the Kharmas periods when the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena rashi.
  • Adhika masa, Pitru Paksha, eclipses, Guru asta and Shukra asta are avoided.
  • Bhadra, Panchak and Rahu Kalam are avoided for the moment of entry.

Strongly preferred

  • Nakshatra. Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. The fixed (dhruva) nakshatras Rohini and the three Utaras are especially praised. Some lists add Pushya or Swati.
  • Tithi. The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th, and Purnima. Avoid the 4th, 8th, 9th and 14th (the rikta tithis and the 8th) and Amavasya.
  • Shukla paksha (the bright fortnight) is preferred.

Ideal

  • Months. Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are the most praised in the Amanta scheme. Chaitra, Ashadha, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Pausha are avoided in the version used here. Some regions also accept Shravana, Kartika or Margashirsha.
  • Weekday. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tuesday and Saturday are avoided in many families. Sunday is accepted by some.
  • Time of day. The Abhijit muhurat around local noon, or a time in the morning outside Rahu Kalam.

Preparation and ritual outline

  1. Clean the home and decorate the entrance with a toran (mango leaf or marigold garland) and a rangoli.
  2. Prepare a kalash (pot filled with water, with mango leaves and a coconut), a Ganesh idol or picture, a lamp, rice, flowers and sweets.
  3. At the chosen time, the family enters with the right foot first, the head of the household carrying the kalash. Place a Ganesh picture or idol in the home.
  4. Perform Ganesh puja, then a short Vastu shanti and Navagraha puja with the priest.
  5. Boil milk in a new vessel until it rises and overflows, a sign of abundance, and offer it as prasad.
  6. Many families end with a Satyanarayan puja and a meal for relatives and friends.

You may chant ॐ गं गणपतये नमः (Om Gam Ganapataye Namah). Ask a priest or elder to guide pronunciation.

Practical notes for the USA

Closing dates are set by lenders, title companies and builders, so they usually take priority. You rarely get to choose the date of the keys.

  • After closing. Close on whatever date the contract says. You may then enter the home briefly at the muhurat, perform the puja and move in on the practical day. You can even do the full puja at the muhurat on a later weekend.
  • If you already moved in. A Griha pravesh puja can still be done at a good muhurat afterwards.
  • Rented homes and apartments. Do a small Ganesh puja and a kalash. Skip a large fire. A lamp is enough, and a camphor or electric lamp suits buildings with smoke alarms.
  • Boiling milk. Use a stovetop with the exhaust fan on.
  • Time zone. Always use the sunrise-based times shown for your city.

A personal note

This is general guidance. A personal muhurat is made from the family's own horoscopes by a qualified jyotishi.

Do

  • Complete cleaning, painting and basic repairs before the ceremony.
  • Bring the first items in at the muhurat: kalash, Ganesh, rice, salt, jaggery, a lamp.
  • Keep the lamp burning and the kitchen stocked on the first day.
  • Invite family, neighbours and friends for the prasad meal.
  • Check the local time of the muhurat for your city.

Don't

  • Don't enter an empty, unclean or unfinished home just to keep a date.
  • Don't leave the home empty and dark on the first night; ideally stay in it.
  • Don't argue or rush at the threshold.
  • Don't use a muhurat from a list for another city or time zone.
  • Don't treat the date as a source of fear if real life forced a different date.
