About

Pradosh (= the twilight before night) is the period around sunset when day turns to evening. The Pradosh Vrat is kept on the 13th tithi, Trayodashi, of both the Shukla and Krishna pakshas, when Trayodashi is present during this twilight. That is about 24 times a year.

The vrat is dedicated to Shiva and Parvati. In South India it is called Pradosham, and is widely observed in Shiva temples.

Significance and stories

Tradition says that in the evening twilight Shiva is especially gracious and dances in joy while the devas gather to see him. Because of this, an evening visit to a Shiva temple, or a short puja at home, is thought to be especially fruitful on Trayodashi.

Many families keep it for peace at home, health and the well-being of children. These are traditional hopes, not guarantees.

How to observe (puja vidhi)

  1. Take a bath and make a sankalpa in the morning to keep the Pradosh fast.
  2. Spend the day in light food or fruit, with calm speech and some japa of Shiva's name.
  3. Bathe again, or wash hands and feet, shortly before Pradosh Kaal.
  4. Set up a Shivling or picture of Shiva with Parvati, Ganesha and Nandi.
  5. During Pradosh Kaal, about 90 minutes around sunset, do abhisheka (= ritual bath) with water, milk, curd, honey and ghee, then clean water again.
  6. Offer bilva leaves, white flowers, incense and a lamp. Chant ॐ नमः शिवाय (Om namah Shivaya) and read the Shiva stuti or Pradosh katha. Ask a priest or elder to guide pronunciation.
  7. Do aarti, share prasad, and break the fast with a simple meal after the puja.

Puja items (samagri)

  • Shivling or picture of Shiva and Parvati
  • Water, milk, curd, honey, ghee
  • Bilva (bel) leaves, white flowers, dhatura or aak flower where traditional
  • Incense, lamp, camphor
  • Sandalwood paste, vibhuti (sacred ash)
  • Fruit and a simple sweet for prasad

Fasting and food

Most people eat only fruit and milk during the day and break the fast after the evening puja. Some keep a strict fast until the puja is done, and others eat one grain-free meal. Choose what you can keep comfortably.

People with health conditions, pregnant or nursing women, children and the elderly should follow their doctor's advice and may keep a lighter fast.

The special Pradosh days

The weekday of Pradosh gives it a name and a particular theme in tradition:

  • Som Pradosh (Monday) is kept especially for peace of mind.
  • Bhauma Pradosh (Tuesday) is associated with relief from debt and trouble, according to tradition.
  • Shani Pradosh (Saturday) is associated with Saturn's influence and is considered especially meaningful for Shiva worship. It is also popular for those wishing for children.

These associations come from tradition and are offered as comfort, not as promises.

Regional customs

In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Pradosham is celebrated with special abhisheka and Nandi worship in temples, and Shani Pradosham draws large crowds. In North India it is often called Pradosh Vrat and the katha is read at home. Traditions vary; follow your family's custom or your priest's guidance.

Celebrating in the USA

Pradosh Kaal falls near sunset, so on working days the puja may need to be done after you return home. Check the time for your city on the site, because it changes with the seasons and daylight saving time. A small Shivling, a steel plate and a little milk and water are enough for home abhisheka, and you can collect the water so that it is poured at a plant afterwards. Many Shiva temples in the USA hold Pradosham puja on Saturday or Sunday evenings nearest the day.

Do

  • Check the Pradosh Kaal for your own city and be ready before it begins.
  • Keep the puja simple and sincere.
  • Visit a Shiva temple in the evening if one is nearby.
  • Offer clean water and bilva leaves with devotion.
  • Feed someone or give a small donation after the vrat.
  • Chant Shiva's name quietly during the day.

Don't

  • Do not eat solid food before the puja if you are keeping the full fast.
  • Do not use tulsi in Shiva puja.
  • Do not use turmeric or kumkum on the Shivling.
  • Do not argue or hold anger through the day.
  • Do not keep a strict fast if you are unwell.
